Comparações II

When making comparisons, -er is normally appended to the end of one syllable adjectives or adverbs. (Para fazer uma comparação, geralmente adiciona-se -er na sílaba final dos adjetivos e advérbios)

	Charles is smarter than Robert. Charles é mais esperto do que Robert.
	He is meaner than her. Ele é mais pão-duro do que ela.
	She is kinder than her husband. Ela é mais gentil do que o marido dela
	She speaks faster than her sister. Ela fala mais rápido do que a irmã dela.

The superlative form is created by appending -est to the end. ( No superlativo adiciona-se -est no final)

	I am the smartest. Eu sou o mais esperto.
	He is the meanest of the three. Ele é o mais mesquinho dos três.
	We are the kindest. Nós somos os mais gentis.

-Er and -est are also used for two syllable adjectives that end in y. The y becomes i. (-Er e -est também são usados para adjetivos de duas sílabas que terminam em y. Troca-se o y por i)

	That frog is uglier. Aquele sapo é mais feio.
	She is the prettiest. Ela é a mais linda.
	Your child is naughtier than mine. Seu filho é mais bagunceiro do que o meu.

Most adjectives or adverbs with more than one syllable are compared with more or most. (Para a maioria dos adjetivos ou advérbios com mais de uma sílaba usa-se more ou most)

	I'm more beautiful than you. Eu sou mais bonita do que você.
	My daughter is more intelligent that your daughter. She get's her intelligence from me. Minha filha é mais inteligente do que a sua filha. Ela puxou essa inteligência de mim.
	I'm more truthful than you. Eu sou mais verdadeiro do que você.

For some adjectives, either -er/-est or more/most can be used. Here are a few of these adjectives.(para alguns adjetivos, -er/-est ou more/most podem ser usados. Abaixa estão alguns deles.)

angry	bravo, zangado	gentle	gentil	simple	simples
cruel	cruel	handsome	bonito	serious	sério
evil	mal, mau	distant	distante	insane	insano, louco
wicked	mal, maldoso	near	perto	content	contente

	That dictator is crueler. Aquele ditador é mais cruel.
	He is more cruel than his father. Ele é mais cruel do que o pai dele.

A few adjectives and adverbs have special forms that are used in comparisons. (alguns adjetivos e advérbios possuem formas especiais para a comparação)

good/well	bom/bem	better	melhor	the best	o melhor
bad/badly	ruim	worse	pior	the worst	o pior
far	longe	farther / further	mais longe	farthest / furthest	o mais longe

	She speaks French better than Helen. Ela fala francês melhor do que a Helen.
	He can do it better than Robert. Ele pode fazer melhor do que Robert.
	They write worse than the others. Eles escrevem pior do que os outros.
	She is the best. Ela é a melhor.
	We do it the best. Nós fazemos o melhor.
	We walked farther than he did. Nós andamos mais longe do que ele.
