Present participles are formed by dropping the ar/er/ir endings and adding -ando for -ar ending verbs and -iendo for -er and -ir ending verbs.

The present progressive (el progresivo) is formed with the present participle. It is used to describe the present, but compared to the present tense expresses more immediacy.
| Yo estoy limpiando mi cuarto. | I'm in the middle of cleaning my room. | |
| Hoy, yo limpio mi cuarto. | Today, I clean my room. | |
| Él está tomando agua. | He is drinking water (right now). | |
| He drinks water/is drinking water. |
