Non-pronounced Final Consonants

Most consonants that come at the very end of a word are not pronounced.

	pas mot chat step word cat (male) cas trop nord case too much north

Masculine and feminine adjectives are distinguised from each other by the pronuciation or non-pronunciation of the final consonant. The addition of an e at the end of the feminine adjective makes the final consonant pronounced (see the Adjective section).

	le livre vert la jupe verte the green book the green skirt

Pronounced Final Consonants

Many word final consonants are pronounced.  The consonants c,r,f,or l (careful) in particular are often pronounced.

There are particular words, besides those ending in c,r,f,or l, that have pronounced final consonants.

Many words borrowed from foreign languages have pronounced final consonants

	tennis oasis express stop   clown islam maïs

as well as words ending in -pt or -ct.
