can - could

	Susan can speak English but she can't speak Spanish. Susan habla inglés pero ella no puede hablar español.
	Beethoven couldn't hear. He was deaf. Beethoven no podia oir. El era sordo.
	Frank can't see. He is blind. Frank no puede ver. Es ciega.
	My friend can't speak. He is a mute. Mi amigo no puede hablar. Es muda.
	The child can't walk. She is paralyzed. El niño no puede caminar. Es paralítico.

That's impossible. Humans can't fly.

Helping verbs, also know as auxiliary verbs(auxiliary verbs), are always coupled with another verb.

should

deber (recomendación)

	You should talk to your professor. Deberías hablar con tu profesor.
	He should see a doctor. Deberías ver al doctor.

must	Deber (obligación)

	She must be in her house. Debe estar en su casa.
	You must tell me the truth! Are you a russian spy? Debes decirme la verdad. ¿Eres un espía ruso?

No hay formas simples de pretérito para should, must y could. Las preguntas se forman invirtiendo las posiciones del sujeto y el verbo, a pesar de que must se utiliza en muy raras ocasiones. Suena un poco antiguo.

Questions are formed with the verbs presented above by bringing the helping verb to the front of the sentence.

	Can he speak German? ¿Habla alemán?
	Can I help you? ¿Te puedo ayudar?
	Could he understand you? ¿Te entiende?
	Should we live downtown or in the suburbs? ¿Deberíamos vivir en el centro o a las afueras?

Estos verbos se llaman verbos de ayuda porque normalmente aparecen junto a otros verbos, a pesar de que a veces pueden ir solos.

Although the following verbs appear by themselves, they still are acting as helping verbs since the main verb is implied.

	I can! ¡Puedo!
	You should. Deberías

Fíjate que cuando un verbo sigue a can, should o must no va precedido de to. To siempre precede al segundo verbo con los restantes verbos de ayuda.

need

necesitar

	We need to talk with the teacher. Necesitamos hablar con su profesor.
	The children need to be there. Los niños necesitan estar ahí.

Some verbs, like need, are sometimes helping verbs and sometimes just verbs.

	This student needs assistance. Este estudiante necesita ayuda.
	I need food! ¡Necesito comida!
