La Négation Negation

To negate something surround the verb with ne and pas.

Je ne mange pas la viande. I don't eat meat.
Elle ne jeux pas le futbol. She doesn't play soccer.
Ils ne savent pas la réponse. They don't know the response.

Ne, like je, is one of the words that drops it's vowel when it come before a vowel. This is called élision.

Il n'est pas une femme. He isn't a woman.
Nous n'avons pas l'argent. We don't have the money.

In casual speech, the ne is often dropped.

Je sais pas. I don't know.

La Partitif Partitive

When you refer to a piece of something - not the entire thing - use the partitive article which is de placed in front of the article and noun.

Je veux le pain. I wan't the bread.

Don't be so greedy!

Je veux du pain. I would like some of the bread.
Le geôlier donne de l'eau aux prisonniers. The jailer gives water to the prisoners.
Donne moi d'argent. Give me some money.

Now would be a good time to study the Type II Irregular Verbs.
