Adverbs

Dropping of the E

Originally the following adverbs were regular. Over the centuries, because the e did not affect the adverb's pronunciation, it was dropped from the spelling. This has occurred to most adverbs that are constructed from feminine adjectives that end in two vowels.

Feminine Adjective Adverb
absolue absolument absolutely
polie poliment politely
résolue résolument resolutely
vraie vraiment truly
Exception: gaiement  gaily

A few adverbs commemorate the dropped e with a circumflex over the final u.

assidue assidûment assiduously
continue continûment continually
crue crûment coarsely
dûe dûment duly
