Les Adjectives Adjectives

Like nouns, adjectives are either masculine and feminine. Normally masculine adjectives ends in a consonant and feminine adjectives end in an e. Plural adjectives are created by adding an s to either the masculine or feminine forms.

Le soldat est très fort. The soilder is very strong.
Cette femme est forte. This woman is strong.

Son fardeau est lourd. His burden is heavy.
La girafe est lourde. The giraffe is heavy.

Le diable est mauvais. The devil is evil.
Ma belle-mère est aussi mauvaise. My mother-in-law is also evil.

Le general est petit. The general is small.
La terre est petite vue de loin. The earth is small seen from afar.

La pôle nord est froide. The pole north is cold.
L'equateur est chaud. The equator is warm.
Le mur est haut. The wall is high.
Cet endroit est parfait. This location is perfect.

Whevever an adjective describes both male and female nouns, a masculine adjective is used.

Le chemisier y la jupe sont laids. The blouse and the skirt are ugly.

In the above sentences, the presence of the e causes the final consonant to be pronounced. Otherwise, it is silent. The addition of the e can alter the pronunciation in other ways. In the following sentences the final syllable of the adjectives is nasalized. The e ending adjectives are not nasalized.

Ce cours est intéressant. The pole north is cold.
La institutrice est intéressante. The (female) teacher is interesting.
L'instituteur est méchant. The teacher is mean.
Elle est méchante. She is mean.
Le bouteille est plein. The bottle is full.
La verre est pleine. The glass is full.

For some adjectives, the addition of the e doesn't affect the sound.

Le paysage est joli. The landscape is pretty.
Cette vedette est jolie. This star (as in actor) is pretty.

Now would be a good time to study the Type I Verbs.
