El Participio Pasado Past Participle

The past participle is formed by dropping the ar/er/ir ending and adding -ado for -ar ending verbs and -ido for -er and -ir ending verbs.

hablar
hablado spoken
comer
comido eaten
vivir
vivido lived

Accent marks are placed over the i of some of the er/ir verbs.

caer
caído fallen  
creer
creído believed
leer
leído read  
oir
oído heard

There are also irregular forms.

abierto opened

muerto dead
cubrir
cubierto closed  
poner
puesto placed
decir
dicho said  
resolver
resuelto resolved
descubrir
descubierto discovered

ver

hacer

Past participles are used to describe the nature or states of things.

La tienda está abierta.
The store is open.

La puerta está cerrada.
The door is closed.

Rene está dormido.
Rene is asleep.

Paco está despierto.
Paco is awake.

Esta es una carta escrita á mano.
This is a hand written letter.

Ahora, el problema está resuelto.
Now, the problem is solved.

Los planes secretos están escondidos detrás de la pintura.
The secret plans are hidden behind the painting.

They are also used to form the present perfect.

Él ha dicho la verdad.
He has said the truth.

Nosotros hemos comido todas las galletas.
We have eaten all the cookies.
