El Gerundio Present Participle

Present particples are formed by dropping the ar/er/ir endings and adding -ando for -ar ending verbs and -iendo for -er and -ir ending verbs.

hablar
  hablando
comer
comiendo
vivir
  viviendo

The present progressive (el progresivo) is formed with the present participle. It is used to describe the present, but compared to the present tense expresses more immediacy.

  Yo estoy limpiando mi cuarto. I'm in the middle of cleaning my room.
  Hoy, yo limpio mi cuarto. Today, I clean my room.
  Él está tomando agua. He is drinking water (right now).
 

Él toma agua.

He drinks water/is drinking water.
